The transpiration rate of plants refers to the speed at which water passes through the plant body and is released into the atmosphere as gas through the plant's surface (primarily leaves). Transpiration generates a transpiration pull, which serves as the primary driving force for passive water uptake and transport within plants. This is particularly crucial for tall trees.
Transpiration facilitates the transport of substances within xylem sap. Mineral salts from the soil and substances synthesized by the root system can be transported and distributed throughout the plant as water is absorbed and collected.
Transpiration also lowers the plant's temperature and prevents leaf scorching. This occurs because water has a high latent heat of vaporization, allowing significant radiant heat to be dissipated during the transpiration process.
Normal transpiration facilitates CO₂ assimilation, as open stomata during transpiration create pathways for CO₂ entry into leaves.
Therefore, crop transpiration rate meters hold significant importance for agricultural research, education, horticultural studies, and forestry research.
